New Feature – Grounds for Celebration! Award

September 19, 2012

Coffee Beans
How many video games have coffee references in them? I don’t know the exact number, but I have played a few over the last several years with some coffee references in them, even writing about and making a video for a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 coffee item.  What is a “Grounds for Celebration! Award”?

The video above is a brief introduction of what will be a feature on Coffee with Games from time to time. If I’m playing a game and I notice a coffee reference, or if perhaps I see a game with a coffee reference that I haven’t even played or isn’t even out yet, I’ll try and give the game some attention with a “Grounds for Celebration! Award”.

How many hours have Wii owners played Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3? Modern Warfare 3 Hours Report

July 15, 2012
It’s not even shiny, but I even noticed it online!

Coffee Beans
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 released for the Wii on November 8, 2011 with a MSRP of $49.99. The game was developed by Infinity Ward/Sledgehammer Games and published by Activision, but ported to the Wii by a team at Treyarch.
The game received an ESRB rating of “Mature” with “Blood and Gore, Drug Reference, Intense Violence, Strong Language” listed as content for gamers and parents to be aware of.

How many more U.S. Wii owners have reported playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 in the last 7 months. Also, how many more “Total Hours” of game-play have been reported since the first data report? Brew yourself some coffee, and let’s take a look!

Data shown in image is for U.S. Wii owners only that have reported data, not world-wide.

The Brew
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 now has approximately 45,137 U.S. Wii owners that have reported data through the Nintendo Channel, with 244 days reported. The game debuted with 3,895 U.S. Wii owners reporting data, so it now has 41,242 more players reporting data over its debut.
Modern Warfare 3’s average play-time per day/session reported is now 2 hours 37 minutes, which is a half hour decrease over the debut average. The game’s average “Per person” now of 48 hours 13 minutes is an increase of 31 hours 50 minutes since the debut average.
The game’s current 2,174,909 Total Hours of reported game-play is an increase of more than 2 million hours over the last 7 months; 2,111,073 “Total Hours” since the last report, to be exact.

Me at “work” in online multiplayer, where most hours are probably spent.

What about the consumers and critics? How have they rated the game?
Modern Warfare 3 has a “professional” review score average of 69.25%, based on 12 reviews on GameRankings.com; while the game has a customer review score average of 84.28%, based on 56 reviews on Amazon.com.

Caffeinated Thoughts
I am below the average hours reported “Per person”, but I did play a few matches last night online and they all ran well. The online multiplayer did require an update before I could play it though, but the patch took only about 30 seconds to download.
As I was running around in one of the matches last night, I ran across another “Hot Coffee” machine that you see in the first image of this story. As I was looking at it though, an opponent decided that I had looked long enough and apparently wanted their own coffee from it, so my time was short lived (literally) at the coffee machine.

If you missed my “Hot Coffee in Modern Warfare 3? Yes Please!” post from December, here is the video for it that shows where you can find a “Hot Coffee” machine in the single-player campaign:

While Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has a good amount of hours reported for a third party game on the Wii, it currently has fewer hours reported than Black Ops did only 4.5 months after it originally released for the Wii.
Overall though, I think it’s pretty clear from the reported game-play hours that the online multiplayer is a big aspect of the game. Wii owners do seem to still be enjoying the game, as I didn’t have any issues last night and today quickly getting into matches, and never had a host migration issue either.

Questions
Have any of you been playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 regularly on the Wii in the last few months? If you are playing it regularly, do you know how many hours you have reported for the game?

Hot Coffee in Modern Warfare 3? Yes Please!

What good are night vision goggles, if your eyes can’t stay open to use them?
Order of successful night vision goggles usage: drink coffee, then use night vision goggles.

Coffee Beans
What’s more awesome than drinking coffee and playing video games? Drinking coffee, and finding coffee related items/references in video games while playing!
I received Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on the Wii last month, and as I was playing through the game’s single-player campaign I recorded a lot of footage from the levels.
I was still early in the campaign, when I ran across something coffee related. What was it? Take a look below.

This is what you survive with.

Caffeinated Thoughts
Modern Warfare 3 is not the first video game I have played to have a coffee item/reference, but it was the first one I can remember having a “Hot Coffee” vending machine in a level, as the image above shows.
If you have played Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, but perhaps missed the “Hot Coffee” vending machine, the video below shows what level I discovered it in, and where:

While I have completed Modern Warfare 3’s single-player campaign, this was the only place in the game “coffee” was spelled out that I found, though I may have missed it in other levels.

Question
Have you found any other coffee items/references in Modern Warfare 3, or perhaps a coffee item/reference in another game that really stuck out?

Caffeinated Thoughts
I have been enjoying my time with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on the Wii, and if you aren’t aware, the Wii version has been patched not once, but twice now; and they even did some behind the scene “fixes” that didn’t require a download.
I finished the single-player campaign in roughly 6 hours, and have spent about another 2 hours going back and playing through some of the levels again. Based on the reported hours, I definitely think Wii owners are playing the game’s online multiplayer.
The video below shows off the first few minutes of one of my multiplayer matches after the second patch was released for the game. If you’re wondering, the results in the video were based off of luck, not skills:

Seeing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 debut already I think continues to show there is a market for FPS games on the Wii, and specifically FPS games with online multiplayer even given the Wii’s online use of “friend codes”.

Modern Warfare 3 Wii Patched, Again! Patch Size & Details

December 1, 2011
Not the patch you were expecting?

Coffee Beans
Modern Warfare 3 has been out less than a month, and Infinity Ward/Treyarch have been busy trying to make sure the game is running well for all console owners. Last week I posted how Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 had been patched on the Wii, and the first patch addressed two major issues players were experiencing: corrupt save files and lag shooting.

Well, Activision/Infinity Ward/Treyarch just released another patch for Modern Warfare 3 on the Wii.  How big is the patch, and exactly what “major fixes” does this Wii patch address? Take a look!

Patch size.
Major fixes

The Brew
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s latest Wii patch only requires 6 blocks of room, now making the required space for the two Modern Warfare 3 Wii patches 46 total blocks.
This patch addresses four main/major problems, with the “Major Fixes” being:

  • “MP – Major optimization work to improve host frame-rate issues (“host-lag”)”
  • “Spec Ops – Major optimization improvement to help with reports of spec ops ‘rubberbanding/lag'”
  • “Session Host Migration Fixes”
  • “Added ‘Add Friend’ option in the multiplayer shell when selecting a player’s playercard”
Overall, with the “Major Fixes” and the “Other Fixes” this MW3 Wii patch is supposed to address/fix 25 issues with the game’s online multiplayer and Spec Ops modes. The “Other Fixes” from this patch can also be seen in the image below:

“Other Fixes”
Caffeinated Thoughts
I am very encouraged to see Modern Warfare 3 on the Wii getting patched, and not ignored. The fact that Activision is allowing Infinity Ward/Treyach time to work on patches for the Wii version, I think shows great respect to Wii owners that purchased the game. Not only will the game hopefully continue to improve with each patch, but hopefully word-of-mouth will spread that Activision is not ignoring the Wii version, allowing Modern Warfare 3’s Wii online community to grow stronger.
After I downloaded the patch earlier this evening, I hopped online for one quick match to see if I noticed anything drastically different. I thought it was running a lot smoother than normal (normal with Netflix streaming in another room), and the video below shows off the first few minutes of the match:

My online friend code for Modern Warfare 3 is 0359-9573-5494. If you add me, feel free to leave your ally code in the comments below, or by emailing it to me at Scott@CoffeeWithGames.com.

Questions
Have any of you been playing Modern Warfare 3 on the Wii? If so, have you downloaded both patches for the game, and noticed an improvement in performance?

Modern Warfare 3 Wii Patched – Issues Addressed, Patch Size

November 22, 2011
This guy’s arm is going to need a patch!

Coffee Beans
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 released 2 weeks ago, and as with many new games released these days there have been some bugs reported in the game.

Some Wii owners were reportedly experiencing a severe online multiplayer bug, where their Wii system would freeze, and the Wii owner would have to erase the Modern Warfare 3 save file and start completely over.  They could be completely leveled up in online, and have no choice but to erase the corrupt file and start over.
I had played about an hour of online multiplayer when I saw reports from different Wii owners about the freeze/memory lose issue, so I decided to finish the game’s single-player campaign first and hoped that Treyarch/Infinity Ward would get the game patched quickly to address the issue.

Another issue with the game’s online multiplayer was something called “lag shooting”, and I did experience it, but at the time I wasn’t sure if it was the accuracy of my weapons and/or lag.  Basically the hit detection in the online multiplayer was not working well, and it resulted in emptying full clips of ammo all around enemies, and never knowing if they were being hit.

Well, last Thurday, November 17 a patch was released for Modern Warfare 3 on the Wii, and the patch was designed to fix the two major issues above with the online multiplayer.  You can see the message to Wii owners that they posted on the Modern Warfare 3 Wii forum below:

How much room do Wii owners need to have available to download the first multiplayer patch for Modern Warfare 3, and how long did it take me to download the patch?  Take a look!

The Brew

As the above image shows, Wii owners will need just 40 Blocks of memory to download the MW3 patch.  If you are wondering how long it should take to download, the video below shows what you can expect using a WiFi connection to download it:

Filtered Thoughts
I am glad to see Treyarch/Infinity Ward actually taking the time to patch the Wii version.  While some Wii owners are experiencing other issues, at least according to the MW3 Wii forums, the first patch seems to have fixed the two huge issues with the online multiplayer.
As for my time online, I have been sticking with Team Deathmatch matches, and leveling up slowly.  I played last night and over the weekend since the patch, and the hit detection is now very accurate, and I haven’t noticed any considerable lag shooting since the patch.

Also, I did finish the single-player campaign over the weekend, and will be posting more thoughts on that in the near future.  If any of you own the Wii version, my friend code is 0359-9573-5494.  Leave your friend code in the comments below, or send me an email with it to Scott@CoffeeWithGames.com.

Questions
Have any of you been playing Modern Warfare 3?  If so, have you finished the single-player campaign yet, or have you just been playing the online multiplayer?

FPS Monday? "I feel like Jack Bauer!", Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Wii Impressions

November 14, 2011

Coffee Beans
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was released this past Tuesday, November 8, for all the current generation home consoles.
The game was developed by Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games, and published by Activision.  The Wii version of MW3 was ported to the Wii console by Treyarch, and it is the first Modern Warfare title to be released day one on the Wii along with the other console versions.
The game received a “Maturerating from the ESRB with “Blood and Gore, Drug Reference, Intense Violence, Strong Language” listed as content for gamers and parents to be aware of.

I played some of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on the Wii a few days last week, so what are my initial impressions of it?  Let’s take a look!

The Brew
The last Call of Duty Wii game I played before Modern Warfare 3 was Call of Duty: World at War.  One of the control settings in MW3 is listed as “W@W STYLE”,  so if you played Call of Duty: World at War on the Wii and enjoyed the controls in that game, you should find the controls in Modern Warfare 3 enjoyable as well.
The first thing I did before firing one bullet in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was to find the control settings.  Once finding them, I adjusted my “Dead Zone” making it slightly smaller than the default setting, but other than adjusting the “Dead Zone” all the other controls were left at default settings.

Dead Zone width and height can be adjusted.

I have played through four of the single-player campaign’s levels.  At one point in a level I said, “I feel like Jack Bauer!”  Why did I feel like Jack Bauer?
Well, if you don’t know who Jack Bauer is, he is/was the star character of the television series 24.  He was shot at a lot, and was placed in crazy scenarios all the time.  As I was dodging bullets(and taking some) in one level, it reminded me of 24.
Not only did the dodging of bullets and taking out enemies remind me of 24, but it appears to me that the writers/level designers for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 were fans of 24, because two out of the four levels I have played so far seem like they were taken directly from 24’s seasons, and put into Modern Warfare 3’s story.

Mrs. Coffee watched me play a few of the levels.  I was battling an enemy military vehicle at one point, and when I finally took it out she said, “Oh, that’s really cool!“, in reference to how it was destroyed.
As I was wrapping up my time with the game that night she said, “Well, one thing the game is definitely not lacking is action.“, and I have to agree with her.  While my impressions are off just a few of the first levels, if you like movies that have a lot of action sequences and you enjoy FPS games, you will probably find yourself enjoying Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s single-player campaign as well.
I have enjoyed my time in the levels and I think the game runs well, especially with so much happening in the levels.  The game-play controls are solid and I have not had any issues with them, and being able to adjust the bounding box/dead zone is a great customization option that World at War was lacking.

Have I played any of Modern Warfare 3’s online multiplayer?  I have.  I am currently rank 7, and have played right about an hour.  A few matches have had some lag issues and I have not been playing with my Wii directly connected to my USB LAN adapter, but overall it seems to be running pretty well over the WiFi.
From what I can see right now, MW3 Wii has 11 different multiplayer match types to choose from:

  • Team Deathmatch
  • Kill Confirmed
  • Mercenary
  • Free-For-All
  • Domination
  • Team Defender
  • Demolition
  • Sabotage
  • Headquarters Pro
  • Search and Destroy
  • Capture the Flag

Not all of the match types are open to play right away, and access to them has to be unlocked.  So far I have only played matches from “Team Deathmatch” which can be played with 6-10 players at a time.
I have enjoyed my time in the matches, even though most have resulted in me getting absolutely destroyed.

Caffeinated Thoughts
Now, I know some of you may be thinking, “Coffee, you failed on your new year’s resolution didn’t you!
Actually no, I haven’t.  I was very fortunate last Wednesday to receive a copy of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 for the Wii from Activision.  I will continue providing coverage of the Wii version over the next several weeks, if not months, and sharing my impressions of the game with you.
If any of you own Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on the Wii, and will be playing it online, my MW3 friend code, or “Ally Code” as the game labels it, is 0359-9573-5494.  If you add me to your list, make sure to leave a comment letting me know, and also feel free to leave your MW3 “Ally Code” in the comments below.
Would I recommend Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 to other Wii owners, based just on my early impressions of it?  Yes, I would.  If you enjoy Wii FPS games, I have not encountered anything in Modern Warfare 3 yet, that would make me question recommending it to other Wii owners.
