It’s Official – Wii’s U.S. Nintendo Channel, Forecast Channel, News Channel & more taken offline.

If you have read stories around here over the last few years, chances are you have probably seen my data report stories on Wii games. I would gather information from the Wii’s Nintendo Channel, and then create images with the reported play-time on games that showed things like average times played and total hours played. You can even read a data report I did on the Everybody Votes Channel, HERE.

Well, as of now, the Nintendo Channel (seen above), Forecast Channel, News Channel, Everybody Votes Channel, and Check Mii Out Channel have been taken offline on the Wii, to never return again. Perhaps Nintendo will release a News and Weather app on the Wii U, but I doubt they will ever release a Nintendo Channel app that shows play-times of Wii U and Wii games, because that data could provide hints of sales numbers for games as well.

Caffeinated Thoughts
I have used the Nintendo Channel almost weekly, for the last 3+ years. Even weeks and months when I didn’t post data reports, I would record the data for my records (data nerd). Seeing the Nintendo Channel services discontinued is the biggest disappointment for me out of all the Wii Channels discontinued. There were some newer Wii games I was hoping to get to report on, like Pandora’s Tower, but due to the Nintendo Channel service being stopped that data will now most likely never be known.

While we used the Forecast Channel, Everybody Votes Channel, Check Mii Out Channel, and News Channel, none of them were used anywhere near as much as the Nintendo Channel in our house, and some of them hadn’t been used regularly in years.

The Nintendo Channel was by far my favorite Wii Channel and not just because of the data, but also because Nintendo started things like Nintendo Week on it and it provided a good way to watch trailers of new games coming out as well.

Questions
Did any of you use a Wii Channel (or two) regularly, and perhaps will be disappointed now that these Wii Channel services have been discontinued?

Did all of you know that the Wii Channels in the U.S./Western market were being taken offline? I didn’t see any sites really report on them being discontinued in the U.S., but I did see it mentioned for Europe and Japan.

Last May, we looked at how many hours had been reported playing Red Steel 2 by U.S. Wii owners, with more than 2 years’ worth of data reported.

Red Steel 2 was released as a Wii exclusive on March 23, 2010 in the U.S., and can still be found to buy, new or used, on many different sites. If you own a Wii, or even Wii U, and are interested in Red Steel 2, you should know the game requires a Wii MotionPlus accessory to play though. As for content to be aware of, Red Steel 2 received an ESRB rating of “TEEN” for “Animated Blood, Mild Language, Mild Suggestive Themes, Violence“.

A description for the game on the Nintendo Channel says, “Embody a lonesome fighter, a man of few words with a shaded past full of mystery. Face various, and increasingly strong, enemies and defeat challenging bosses in epic and intense fights. Visit a remote mixed metropolis in the middle of the American desert, where Eastern and Western culture have been smashed together: Caldera.”

About how many U.S. Wii owners have game-play data reported for Red Steel 2 through the Nintendo Channel, and how many hours have they reported playing the game since it released over 3 years ago? Brew yourself some coffee, and let’s take a look!

How many hours did you play?

The Brew
Red Steel 2 now has approximately 75,407 U.S. Wii owners with game-play data reported through the Nintendo Channel, which is just over 8,800 more players with data reported than last year, now with 1,112 days possibly reported.

The game currently has 759,283 Total Hours of reported game-play, which is an increase of 97,308 Total Hours since the report last year. Its average reported “Per person” has increased slightly by 7 minutes, and is now sitting at 10 Hours 4 Minutes “Per person”. The average time spent playing the game each time/session reported, is about 1 Hour 45 Minutes.

The game’s “professional” critic review score average is now slightly lower than it was last May, currently sitting at 80.50% based on 48 reviews from GameRankings.com. While the critic review score average is slightly lower since last year, the customer review score average has increased slightly. The game’s customer review score average is now 88.08%, now based on 89 customer reviews between both SKUs of the game.

When I wrote the piece last May, I said, “Have I played Red Steel 2 yet? No, but I may be making a trip to my local Game Stop store today, where I originally reserved Red Steel 2.

I did end up buying Red Steel 2 the day of the post last May, and I completed the game last June. My game-play data record for Red Steel 2 on the Nintendo Channel shows my play-time as 13 Hours 46 Minutes, over 6 times. From my rough math, this means I spent about 2 Hours 17 Minutes each time I played the game, until I beat it. While I enjoyed my time with Red Steel 2, I’m actually still a bigger fan of the original Red Steel, as I enjoyed the levels and game-play mechanics (even though not perfect) more in the original.

I’m glad Nintendo made the jump to HD with the Wii U, and enjoy having an awesome feature like Off-TV play with the Wii U GamePad now, but I think it’s a shame the video game market won’t likely see another game like Red Steel or Red Steel 2, because of traditional controllers being more standard now.

If Ubisoft was to update the original Red Steel for the Wii U though, perhaps with HD graphics, online multiplayer, and optional GamePad and Wii Remote controls (like what Black Ops II offers), it would probably be a day one buy for me.

How much has Xenoblade Chronicles been played? Official U.S. Nintendo Channel data report.

Xenoblade Chronicles released last year in the U.S. on April 6th. The game was sold exclusively at GameStop (stores and online) and had a MSRP of $49.99.

The game was developed by Monolith Soft and published by Nintendo, and received an ESRB rating of “TEEN” with “Blood, Mild Language, Partial Nudity, Use of Alcohol and Tobacco, Violence” listed as content for parents and gamers to be aware of.

How many hours have U.S. Wii owners reported playing the Xenoblade Chronicles since it released last year, and about how many U.S. Wii owners now have data reported for the game? Brew yourself some coffee, and let’s take a look at the official U.S. Nintendo Channel data, as well as other information about Xenoblade Chronicles!

40+ hours to beat the game?

The Brew
Xenoblade Chronicles now has approximately 15,193 U.S. Wii owners that have gameplay data reported through the Wii’s Nintendo Channel, with 367 days possibly reported. The game has seen an increase of about 12,000 more players with data reported, since its initial data report last year.

Considering Xenoblade Chronicles was somewhat of a limited Wii release, being only available at one retailer, the game’s first year of reported data is pretty good. The game now has 650,133 Total Hours reported (shown in the image above), which is an increase of almost 600,000 Total Hours since the initial debut amount.

For some comparison to other exclusive Wii games, Xenoblade Chronicles’ first year’s worth of Total Hours reported isn’t as high as what Metroid: Other M or Monster Hunter Tri had reported; but it is higher than what Red Steel 2 had reported over its first year.

The game’s average reported play-time is now 42 Hours 48 Minutes “Per person”, which is an increase of 25 Hours 55 Minutes to its debut average from last year. According to the data shown, U.S. Wii owners spend nearly 3 hours playing Xenoblade Chronicles each time they sit down to play it.

How was the game received by customers and critics? The game has a “professional” review score average of 91.74%, based on 42 reviews on GameRankings.com. As for customer reviews, the “Average User Rating” on GameStop.com is a 9.5 out of 10, based on 133 user reviews. The game has a customer review score average of 94.03%, based on 57 customer reviews from Amazon.com.

Caffeinated Thoughts
Nintendo released a Wii U Nintendo Direct in January this year, and ended it by showing a new game that Monolith Soft is currently working on for the Wii U. The game was hinted at being titled X, at the end of its trailer, and appears to be a spinoff of Xenoblade Chronicles of some sort.

If you have not seen what Xenoblade Chronicles looks like in action, and if you haven’t seen what Monolith Soft’s Wii U game looks like, the trailers below should give you a decent idea:

I have not played Xenoblade Chronicles, and don’t own it. Seeing some of the asking prices for it on Amazon.com now, and even the “used” price on GameStop.com while putting together this piece makes me think the game won’t be joining our collection anytime soon.

That being said though, I do think the reported gameplay data, both the Total Hours and the average “Per person”, is pretty impressive for what was a limited U.S. Wii release. If Monolith Soft’s new Wii U title provides anywhere close to the average hours “Per person” that Xenoblade Chronicles has for Wii owners, I think it might be worth a buy when it releases (assuming Nintendo of America doesn’t take several years to actually publish it, once its fully developed and translated).

Fishing Resort’s official Nintendo Channel debut data. Hours spent fishing in a virtual paradise…

Do you like fishing, virtually or in real life?

Fishing Resort was released for the Wii in the U.S. on November 22, 2011, with two SKUs available for purchase. There was a standalone software version with a MSRP of $19.99, or Wii owners could also buy the game bundled with a fishing rod accessory for $29.99.

Fishing Resort was developed by PROPE, which is the studio formed by Yuji Naka (previous head of Sonic Team) and who is also said to be “The Creator of Sonic” in a portion of the game’s description on Amazon.com. The game was published by XSEED Games for its U.S. release, and received an ESRB rating of “EVERYONE” with no content listed for parents or gamers to be aware of.

The Nintendo Channel description for the game reads, “Fishing Resort is a fishing game that takes place on a large tropical paradise and uses the Wii Remote to mimic the action of casting and the Nunchuk for reeling. This paradise offers lakes, streams, and even ice fishing in addition to the deep and shallow sea fishing with more than 200 varieties of fish available.”

About how many U.S. Wii owners have reported fishing in the virtual paradise found in Fishing Resort since it released? Grab your fishing gear, grab your coffee, and let’s take a look!

Fishing, more replay value than Sonic?

The Brew
Fishing Resort has approximately 1,659 U.S. Wii owners that have gameplay data reported through the Nintendo Channel. The game just crossed the minimum 50,000 Total Hours that is required before data shows up on the Nintendo Channel, this week with 496 days possibly reported.

The game’s average reported play-time “Per person” is 30 Hours 9 Minutes, as the image above shows, which makes Fishing Resort the Wii’s most played fishing game “Per person” in the U.S., at least according to this data. When U.S. Wii owners play Fishing Resort, they are fishing in its virtual paradise for about 2 Hours 35 Minutes each time (or day) reported.

First, you’re probably thinking, “Coffee, what other Wii fishing games did you compare the hours ‘Per person’ with?”

Glad you asked! Here are the other Wii fishing games I compared the data with: Bass Pro Shops’ The StrikeBig Bass ArcadeCocoto Fishing MasterFish’em AllFishing MasterFISHING MASTER WORLD TOURRapala Fishing FrenzyRapala We FishReel Fishing ChallengeReel Fishing Challenge II, and Reel Fishing Ocean Challenge. Now, you may be wondering how Fishing Resort was received by critics and customers? Well, the game has a “professional” review score average of 72.50%, based on 10 reviews on GameRankings.com. Like many other Wii titles I have done data reports on though, the game has a higher customer review score average of 91.34%, between both versions, based on 97 customer reviews from Amazon.com.

Caffeinated Thoughts
While I have not played Fishing Resort, or any of the other Wii fishing games I listed above, I do think it looks/sounds like it could be fun (and I think the data confirms that). If you haven’t seen what Fishing Resort is like, here are two videos that will hopefully give you an idea:

Last year, I received an email that asked me to do a data report on Fishing Resort. The email was from gamerace, who is associated with WiiWareWave, and he mentioned how the forum activity on WiiWareWave for Fishing Resort was pretty active, with some users “playing it into the hundreds of hours”. The Fishing Resort forum thread is still active, with the most recent post being just 2 days ago, on April 3rd. I responded to his email that while I was tracking the game then, it didn’t have any data showing up. I said, “these type of games can take a while to show up (if at all) due to lack of advertising and name recognition”.

Apparently though, the lack of advertising and name recognition for Fishing Resort has not prevented the game from being enjoyed by those that have played it!

So, what does having a higher reported average “Per person” than the other games I listed above likely mean? Well, if you owned all of the games listed, it’s likely that you would get the most hours of gameplay out of Fishing ResortIn short, you could probably expect the best replay value from Fishing Resort, out of all the Wii games listed above.

I’m glad to see another XSEED published Wii game have gameplay data show up, and hopefully they will also have success with Pandora’s Tower, which is releasing later this month, in the gameplay hours and sales departments!

What is the Wii’s most played Need for Speed game, based on "Total Hours" reported played?

Did you know the Wii had six Need for Speed games released for it? Well, at least six in the United States. Six. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6! I didn’t realize there were so many Need for Speed games within 6 years, much less six Need for Speed games on one console!

The image above shows the six Need for Speed games that released on the Wii in the United States, at least that I’m aware of. They were: Need for Speed CarbonNeed for Speed: Pro StreetNeed for Speed: UndercoverNeed for Speed NITRONeed for Speed: Hot Pursuit, and Need for Speed: The Run. There could have been another that I missed, but these are what I found in my research.

Now, if you’re a Wii U owner, like myself, you may be aware (or not) that Need for Speed: Most Wanted U is releasing for the system today, March 19th. While it will be the Wii U’s first Need for Speed game, if the number of Need for Speed games on the Wii is any clue, Most Wanted U won’t be the Wii U’s last.

Before you go off and start playing Need for Speed: Most Wanted U though, what is the Wii’s most played Need for Speed game based on the total hours reported played from U.S. Wii owners? Brew yourself some coffee, and let’s take a look!

The Brew
If you guessed Need for Speed Carbon as the most played Need for Speed Wii game, at least according to total hours reported from U.S. Wii owners, you guessed right!

Need for Speed Carbon was the first Need for Speed game on the Wii, releasing on November 20, 2006. It was published by Electronic Arts (EA), and the game received an ESRB rating of “EVERYONE 10+“with “Violence” listed as content for gamers and parents to be aware of when it released.

Need for Speed Carbon has approximately 218,258 U.S. Wii owners that have reported almost 5 million “Tota Hours” of gameplay, through the Nintendo Channel with 2,310 days possibly reported.

The 4,912,413 Total Hours reported, makes Need for Speed Carbon the Wii’s most played Need for Speed game according to total hours reported on the Nintendo Channel. The game’s average reported play-time is 22 Hours 31 Minutes “Per person”, as you can see in the image above, which averages out to be about 1 hour 42 minutes played per day/time reported.

How was the Wii’s first Need for Speed game received by critics and customers? The game has a “professional” critic review score average of 65.39%, based on 23 reviews on GameRankings.com. It has a customer review score average of 76.96%, based on 79 reviews from Amazon.com.

Caffeinated Thoughts
I never played any of the Need for Speed Wii games, but I did play one of the older titles. I think it was maybe the original Need for Speed that released on the original PlayStation (yes, that many years ago!).

Again, Need for Speed Carbon is the Wii’s most played game from the series according to the total hours reported, and while it was the first Need for Speed game on the system, *it should be noted that just being the first game released in a Wii series, doesn’t always make it the most played. There is another Need for Speed Wii game that is most played, at least according to hours played/averaged “Per person”, that we may take a look at later this week!

If you have started reading the data reports on CoffeeWithGames just in the last year or so, you may have missed how my data images used to look before I had a capture device. I did a data report on Need for Speed Carbon back in 2009, which you can read HERE.

Since that first data report over 3 years ago, the game has had over 70,000 more Wii owners with data reported for it through the Nintendo Channel, almost two million more “Total Hours” reported, and its average “Per person” has increased by just over an hour. I think this shows that the game was/is being played a good amount these last several years, including a good amount by late Wii adopters that bought it.

As I mentioned in the “Coffee Beans” section above, if you own a Wii U and have enjoyed the Need for Speed games in the past, you may be interested in Need for Speed: Most Wanted U. The game is releasing for the system in the U.S. today, and the Wii U version has a MSRP of $59.99, includes some DLC content, and it is one of the Wii U titles included in Target’s “Buy Two, Get One Free” sale I posted about yesterday morning.

Again, while I haven’t played any of the Wii’s Need for Speed games, I am interested in Need for Speed: Most Wanted U, because I was a big fan of the Burnout games. The developer behind this Wii U Need for Speed title is the same developer behind the Burnout games. Depending if I head out to Target this week, and what games they have available, may determine if Need for Speed: Most Wanted U joins our Wii U collection.

Seeing Need for Speed Carbon on the Wii with so many “Total Hours” reported and the average “Per person”, I can only imagine that Need for Speed: Most Wanted U will give Wii U owners many hours of fun, especially with the included DLC and extra Wii U features such as Off-TV play.

Movie Magic Monday! Disney’s Alice in Wonderland data report.

What is Movie Magic Monday? When I was younger (about 20 years younger), I really enjoyed a show on the Discovery Channel called “Movie Magic”. It was a behind-the-scenes type series, that showed how special effects in movies were made. Usually, each episode would cover a specific special effect done in movies, such as model makers building miniature models for movies.

So, this new Movie Magic Monday feature will be about video games, that are based around movies, posted on Mondays. If you have ever wanted to tumble down the rabbit hole, you might enjoy this first Movie Magic Monday.

Alice in Wonderland was released for the Nintendo Wii on March 2, 2010. The game was developed by Étranges Libellules (now closed) and published by Disney Interactive Studios, and it received an ESRB rating of “EVERYONE 10+” with “Fantasy Violence” listed as content for parents and gamers to be aware of. The game’s development was “inspired by Tim Burton’s” movie, Alice in Wonderland, which released in theaters on March 5, 2010.

How many hours have U.S. Wii owners reported playing Alice in Wonderland, since it released just over 3 years ago? Brew yourself some coffee, and let’s take a look!

Alice in Wonderland has approximately 28,301 U.S. Wii owners that have reported gameplay hours through the Nintendo Channel. U.S. Wii owners have reported playing close to 300,000 hours, as the image above shows, with 1,105 days possibly reported.

The game’s average reported play-time is 10 hours 13 minutes “Per person”, as the image above shows, which averages to be about 1 hours 19 minutes played per time/day reported. The movie has a runtime of 1 hour 49 minutes.

What about critic and customer reviews for Alice in Wonderland? The game has a “professional” critic review score average of 70.50%, based on 10 reviews on GameRankings.com. It has a customer review score average of 84.00%, based on 30 reviews from Amazon.com.

Caffeinated Thoughts
While I have not played the game, Alice in Wonderland, Mrs. Coffee and I did see the movie when it was in theaters, and we saw the “3D” version. We enjoyed the movie, but we haven’t purchased it on DVD or Blu-ray yet (it will probably be Blu-ray, once we decide on a player!).

Seeing the game with an average time of more than 10 hours “Per person”, really surprised me for a movie based game! Alice in Wonderland has a higher average play-time reported “Per person”, than some Wii exclusive games, like Red Steel 2 and Deadly Creatures.

If you didn’t see the movie, here are two statistics I learned about it, while researching information for this post. According to Box Office Mojo:
1) Alice in Wonderland is currently ranked 13th overall, for worldwide grosses with movies.
2) It is currently ranked as having the 2nd best opening weekend, for March movie releases, only behind The Hunger Games (the newly released Oz The Great and Powerful is close behind though!).

WiiWare Wednesday! Mega Man 9 – How many hours have U.S. Wii owners reported playing?

Mega Man 9 was released for Nintendo’s WiiWare service on September 22, 2008, in the U.S., at a $10 price point. The game was co-developed by Inti Creates and Capcom, with Capcom publishing it. It received an ESRB rating of “EVERYONE” with only “Mild Cartoon Violence” listed as content for parents and gamers to be aware of.

How many U.S. Wii owners have reported playing Mega Man 9 since it released, and how many hours have they reported playing it with 1,624 days of data possibly reported? Brew yourself some coffee, and let’s take a look!

The Brew
Mega Man 9 has approximately 68,115 U.S. Wii owners that have gameplay data reported through the Nintendo Channel, and the average play-time per day/session is just over 50 Minutes.

As the image above shows, Mega Man 9 has almost 700,000 Total Hours of gameplay reported, which makes it the most played Mega Man game on the Wii, based on the Total Hours reported.

Like all other WiiWare titles, customer reviews are not available for the game directly on the console, but the game does have an 8.1 out of 10 “User Score”, based on 45 ratings on Metacritic.com. The WiiWare version of Mega Man 9 has a “professional” critic review score average of 84.04%, based on 28 reviews on GameRankings.com.

The U.S. WiiWare release of Mega Man 9 has made Capcom about $681,150 (before taxes and profit sharing) over the last 4 years, just based on the number of players that have data reported and the game’s $10 price point.

Caffeinated Thoughts
I mentioned in 2010 that I had never played any Mega Man game for any length of time. Now that we are 2013, that unfortunately still has not changed.

Being that I really enjoy platforming games, I don’t know why (other than my cheapness) that I don’t own any of the Mega Man games. Hopefully, Nintendo gets the Wii U’s Virtual Console and eShop issue straightened out quickly. Perhaps after they figure it out, I will look at purchasing a Mega Man game and be able to play it on just the Wii U GamePad, as I have come to enjoy that feature for several Wii U games already.

I would buy it for 30 cents, IF that were to somehow magically happen.

The Amazing Spider-Man was released on June 26, 2012 for the Nintendo Wii, and was based around the Spider-Man movie of the same name. The game was developed by Beenox and published by Activision, and it received an ESRB rating of “TEEN” with “Mild Language, Mild Suggestive Themes, Violence” listed as content for parents and gamers to be aware of.

A description for the game on the Wii’s Nintendo Channel says, “Spidey is back with the return of wall crawling, web-slinging action! Perform acrobatic attacks and stealth maneuvers with the brand new web rush combat system. Uncover the rest of Peter Parker’s untold story in the original epilogue to the film.”

While we have looked at another Spider-Man Wii game before, how many hours have U.S. Wii owners reported web-slinging in The Amazing Spider-Man since it released last year? Brew yourself some coffee, and let’s take a look!

The Amazing Spider-Man has approximately 11,023 U.S. Wii owners that have reported gameplay hours, with 251 days possibly reported. The average play-time reported is 8 Hours 0 Minutes “Per person” as the image shows, which averages to be about 2 Hours 15 Minutes played per time (or day) reported.

As the image also shows, U.S. Wii owners have reported web-slinging in The Amazing Spider-Man nearly 90,000 Total Hours (over 500 weeks’ worth). While it’s not as high as other games based on the number of days possibly reported, the fact the game did have hours show up in less than a year since it released is a positive compared to many other Wii games.

What about critic and customer reviews for the Wii version of The Amazing Spider-Man? Well, the game has a “professional” critic review score average of 64.33%, based on 3 reviews on GameRankings.com. It has a customer review score average of 66.66%, based on 9 reviews from Amazon.com.

First, if you missed how Activision promoted the game last year, here is the initial trailer for it, as well as an extra trailer showing off more from the HD version of the game (it says Wii Trailer, but was for the HD version I believe):

While the Wii version of The Amazing Spider-Man bears the same name as the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 version released at the same time, it doesn’t feature the exact same open-world gameplay of the other version, which I expect the open-world gameplay would add more hours and replay value to the game overall. This also might be one reason the customer and critic reviews of the Wii version of the game averaged lower than the other version, due to the limited exploration in the Wii version.

With the game’s overall reported average of 8 Hours “Per person” probably being about how many hours you can expect to play it, before beating it, these reported hours are probably not a reflection time you can expect from the PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and now Wii U version(s) of the game.

You can watch a movie many times, just as you can play a game many times. I always find it interesting to see what the average hours (and/or minutes) played per day/time is on games, and not just the overall reported average. Why? Because it shows if gamers are playing the game in shorter sessions, or longer sessions, and what I can maybe expect if I get it.

I think it’s interesting that Wii owners have reported playing The Amazing Spider-Man game (each time/day reported) about as long as it would take to watch the movie (a movie I still haven’t seen!). The The Amazing Spider-Man movie has a run time of 136 minutes (which is 2 hours 16 minutes), and again, the Wii game’s average play session is just over 2 hours 15 minutes.

Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles released on November 13, 2007 for the Nintendo Wii with a MSRP of $49.95. The game was published by Capcom, and it received an ESRB rating of “MATURE” with “Blood and Gore, Violence” listed as content for gamers and parents to be aware of.

How many hours can you expect from Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles if you have never played it? How many U.S. Wii owners have reported playing it, and how many hours have they reported playing the game since it released? Based on the Resident Evil Wii games with data reported through the Nintendo Channel, Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles is the most played Resident Evil Wii game according to its 3,655,110 Total Hours reported.

How did critics and gamers review the game? The game has a “professional” critic review score average of 75.12%, based on 55 reviews on GameRankings.com. It has a customer review score average of 67.81%, based on 151 reviews from Amazon.com.

Critics seemed to enjoy the game and were able to get by issues in the game, while some customers have been strongly opinionated about why the game is tough to recommend and seemingly broken according to some.

Caffeinated Thoughts
I have not played any of the Wii’s Resident Evil rail shooting games such as The Umbrella Chronicles, but I did own and beat Resident Evil 4 on the Wii. If you are not familiar with the storyline and gameplay of The Umbrella Chronicles, the video below will give you a good idea of what you can expect.

I don’t think seeing Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles as the Wii’s most played Resident Evil game according to “Total Hours”, is really surprising. It was the Wii’s first original, non-port, Resident Evil game and it was only followed up by just one other original Resident Evil Wii game; Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles, which was also a rail shooter. The other three Resident Evil games were all ports of older Resident Evil games.

One thing I am wondering about is Resident Evil on the Wii U. Capcom is currently listed to only have one Wii U title in development and scheduled for release in the system’s launch window, and that game is Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. I’m wondering if Capcom will take a different approach with the Wii U system, like the Wii Resident Evil rail shooters, and create new Resident Evil games for it; or, will they start off by porting over perhaps Resident Evil 5 and the newly released Resident Evil 6, both of which were not released for the Wii?

The game’s play-time has increased almost an hour from the average reported over 2 years ago, and is now at 7 Hours 18 Minutes “Per person”, which averages out to be about 1 Hour 11 Minutes played per time/day.

How was the game received by critics and customers? The game has a “professional” review score average of 65.55%, based on 33 reviews on GameRankings.com. It has a customer review score average of 77.92%, based on 125 reviews from Amazon.com.

Apparently, like many Wii titles, gamers enjoy the game more than critics.

Caffeinated Thoughts
I played The House of the Dead 2 on the Sega Dreamcast, and I dug through my Dreamcast collection earlier tonight trying to see if I had a copy of the game. I thought I had a copy, because a friend gave me the Sega Dreamcast Starfire blaster, but I couldn’t find the game in my collection unfortunately.

If you haven’t seen any footage of how The House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return looks on the Wii and the type of gameplay it offers, the trailer below should give you a good idea of what you can expect.

When the game released it was originally $29.99, but you can now find it used for under $20 at Game Stop and Best Buy, or for right around $10 used on Amazon.com, HERE. Seeing it has a play-time average “Per person” of under 10 hours, I think picking it up for less than $10 would be the best route to go if you’re interested in the game.
