Skate 3’s PS3 & Xbox 360 Amazon.com Sales Ranks

May 12, 2010

Skate 3 was released today for the PS3 and the Xbox 360(sorry Wii only owners).

The last skateboarding game that I purchased, was Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3, on the Nintendo Gamecube.
I have never played any of the Skate games in the series, but I have heard/read they are pretty solid skateboarding games.
In April, I started tracking the sales ranks for both the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Skate 3.
Here’s the chart:
(click chart to enlarge)

Chart Info:
The only day I missed collecting data was Wednesday, April 21.
The Xbox 360 version of Skate 3 crossed into Amazon.com’s “Top 100”, on May 4, around 11:40PM.  It was ranked #72, when I recorded the data that day.
Skate 3 on the PS3 crossed into Amazon.com’s “Top 100”, 5 days after the Xbox 360 version, on May 9, around 11:25PM.  It was ranked #90, when I recorded the data that day.
The Highs & Lows:
The highest recorded sale rank of Skate 3 on the PS3 was #85, on May 10, around 6:45PM.
The lowest recorded sale rank for Skate 3 on the PS3 was #761, on April 17, around 12:40AM.
The highest recorded sale rank for the Xbox 360 version was #35, on May 10, around 6:45PM.
The lowest recorded sale rank for Skate 3 on the Xbox 360 was #340, on April 20, around 12:10PM.
Questions:
As I said above, when it comes to skateboarding games, I have never played any of the Skate games, only Tony Hawk games.
If you have played both Skate games and Tony Hawk games, which series do you prefer more?
Did anybody purchase Skate 3 today for either the PS3 or Xbox 360?  If you have had the chance to play it already, what do you think about it, so far?

If you are interested in either version of Skate 3, you can see prices for both on Amazon.com below:

Monster Hunter 3: Amazon.com’s April Sales Ranks

May 3, 2010
(click chart to enlarge)

The Quick Brew:
Monster Hunter 3 was released on April 20, 2010.
The chart above tracks Monster Hunter 3’s Amazon.com sales ranks, for both versions of the game, from April 1 through April 30.
As stated above, Monster Hunter 3 was released with two different versions:
1) The Monster Hunter 3 Standard software package, which was the software only, with a MSRP of $49.99
2) The Monster Hunter 3 Classic Controller Pro(CCP) bundle package, which was bundled with the new Classic Controller Pro, with a MSRP of $59.99
Reaching the Top 100:
The first record of the Monster Hunter 3 Classic Controller Pro bundle entering Amazon.com’s “Top 100” was on April 6, around 3:00PM.  It was ranked #95 at the time.
The first record of the Monster Hunter 3 Standard version, software only, entering Amazon.com’s “Top 100” was on April 14, around 10:30PM.  It was ranked #96.
Highest Record Sales Rank:
The highest sales rank I recorded Monster Hunter 3(game only) was #10, on April 19, around 9:50PM.
The highest sales rank I recorded the Monster Hunter 3 Classic Controller Pro bundle was #22, on April 15, around 5:25PM.
(You may want/need some coffee before continuing)

Thoughts:
The chart shows that on April 14, Capcom bought advertising space, and let Monster Hunter 3 be the “sponsor”, for the 200th episode of South Park.
I find it very interesting that April 14, around 10:30PM, was the first time the Monster Hunter 3 Standard version of the game, crossed into Amazon.com’s “Top 100”.
I did not record the Monster Hunter 3 Standard version of the game, falling out of Amazon.com’s “Top 100” for the rest of the month of April.
I think that Capcom has probably been taken by surprise, by how well the Monster Hunter 3 Classic Controller Pro bundle has been selling.
As stated above, on April 14, Monster Hunter 3 was the “sponsor” for the 200th episode of South Park, I do not know what time, Eastern Standard Time, the episode aired, but I believe the advertisement on South Park greatly increased sales of the Monster Hunter 3 Classic Controller Pro bundle.
April 15, around 1:50AM, was the first time I have recorded of Amazon.com being “sold-out” or “back-ordered” of the Monster Hunter 3 Classic Controller Pro bundle.
According to my records, the Monster Hunter 3 Classic Controller Pro bundle was repeatedly “sold-out” or “back-ordered” on Amazon.com from April 15 through April 23.
On April 23, around 3:20PM, the Monster Hunter 3 CCP bundle was ranked #448.
April 24, around 2:35AM, was the first day I have recorded, that Amazon.com had the Monster Hunter 3 CCP bundle available again.
You can see the huge increase in sales rank, when Amazon.com had the bundle available again.
On April 24, around 2:35AM, the Monster Hunter 3 CCP bundle was ranked #106.
The Monster Hunter 3 CCP bundle was in stock, on April 24 and April 25.  Since those two days, the CCP bundle has had issues staying available/in-stock on Amazon.com.
You can tell from the chart’s data, from April 1 through April 15, the Monster Hunter 3 Classic Controller Pro bundle, was the bundle people were choosing when purchasing the game from Amazon.com.
I wonder how high the Monster Hunter 3 CCP bundle would have ranked, if it had been continuously available?
Questions:
Have you purchased either version of Monster Hunter 3?  If so, did you purchase the game only, or did you go with the Classic Controller Pro bundle?
I purchased the game only version, and I have played using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controls so far.
If you watched the 200th episode of South Park, and if you’re on the East Coast, what time did it air?
I don’t have cable television, so I don’t know what time South Park episodes first air on EST.
Also, if you are playing Monster Hunter 3 online, this next week I should have a little bit more time for some online play.  My Monster Hunter 3 online name/code is:  Coffee KKJ9F2.

Red Steel 2’s Amazon.com Sales Ranks

May 1, 2010
Red Steel 2’s Amazon.com Sales Ranks
Red Steel 2 was released on March 23, 2010.
The chart above tracks Red Steel 2’s Amazon.com sales ranks, for both bundles of the game:
Red Steel 2 game only
Red Steel 2 with Wii MotionPlus
The sales ranks were gathered at random times each day, from March 23 through April 30.
The highest sales ranks for both versions were recorded on March 23, the day Red Steel 2 released.
The highest rank I recorded for Red Steel 2(game only) was #83, on March 23, 2010 around 11:55PM.
The highest rank I recorded for the Red Steel 2 w/ WM+ bundle was #85, around 9:20PM, on March 23, 2010.

Thoughts:
Back in January, Ubisoft said it was cutting Red Steel 2’s sales projections from around one million units, to about 500,000 units.
You can read Ubisoft’s full statement, here: http://www.totalvideogames.com/Red-Steel-2/news/Ubisoft-Cuts-Sales-Projections-In-Half-For-Red-Steel-2-14904.html
From the sales data on Amazon.com, and the first month’s NPD data, if Red Steel 2 reaches 500,000 units, it will be very slowly.
Why do I think think it will be very slowly?
According to NPD data, The Conduit sold around 71,000 units its first month of release.
Red Steel 2’s first month’s NPD data was only around 50,000 units.
Red Steel 2 sold about 30% fewer units, in about the same number of days as The Conduit, in terms of NPD first month sales numbers.
While I do not know if Ubisoft mentioned a time-frame of how long they expect it will take Red Steel 2 to reach 500,000 units, if The Conduit’s numbers are any indication, Red Steel 2 will be lucky to reach 500,000 units within one year of its release.
Questions:
Do you think Red Steel 2 will reach Ubisoft’s adjusted goal of 500,000 unit sales?  If so, when do you think it will reach the goal?
At this point as stated above, I do not think Red Steel 2 will reach 500,000 unit sales, within a year of its release.

Do you think Red Steel 2 needs more advertisements, or a price-cut to help spur sales?  Or, do you think Ubisoft should just hope it turns into a nice slow burn title?
I think Red Steel 2 needs a nice price-cut, very soon, if it is going to reach 500,000 unit sales any time soon.
The Conduit was out only about 4.5 months, before its MSRP of $49.99, dropped down to a MSRP of $29.99.(source: http://gonintendo.com/viewstory.php?id=102898)

Monster Hunter 3 and Red Steel 2: Sales Comparisons

April 19, 2010
Monster Hunter 3 & Red Steel 2 Amazon.com Sale Rank Comparisons

(click chart to enlarge)
Last week, I posted up two charts.
The first chart showed Red Steel 2’s Amazon.com sale ranks from March 9 through April 11.
The second chart showed Monster Hunter 3’s sale ranks for the same time period.
The Chart Data:
The chart shows the sale ranks for:
The lightning bolt symbols on the chart show the days Red Steel 2 and Monster Hunter 3 television commercials were reported as being seen aired on television.
  • The yellow lightning bolt is the first day a Red Steel 2 commercial was reported, on March 17, 2010.
  • The green lightning bolt is the day a new Red Steel 2 commercial was reported, this one was about a minute and a half in length and aired during a WWE show.  It was reported on March 29, 2010.
  • The orange lightning bolt is the first day a Monster Hunter 3 commercial was reported.  It was reported on April 7, 2010.
The star symbols show the days Red Steel 2 and Monster Hunter 3 broke into Amazon.com’s Top 100 in video games.
  • On March 23, 2010, around 6:00PM, both versions of Red Steel 2 were recorded in Amazon.com’s Top 100.
  • The day Monster Hunter 3 entered Amazon.com’s Top 100 was on April 6, around 3:00PM(only day marked on calendar, not time).
  • Monster Hunter 3, the game only, had not entered Amazon.com’s Top 100 by April 11, but has since done so.
Again, the data in the chart was gathered from March 9 through April 11, with March 15 being the only day sale ranks weren’t captured for either game.  The sale ranks for the games in the chart were all gathered within about three minutes of each other, and I would double check to make sure the ranks were the same after gathering them.
(You may need some coffee now!)
Thoughts:
To me, it looks like Monster Hunter 3 is going to outperform Red Steel 2.
I think Monster Hunter 3 will outperform Red Steel 2, 2:1 for the first month sales performance when we see the NPD data for April.
Red Steel 2 was confirmed to have sold about 50,000 units in March, according to the NPD data.
I think Monster Hunter 3 will cross 100,000 units its first month.
Questions:
If you purchased Red Steel 2 and already completed it, now that some time has passed from the release of the game, do you still recommend Red Steel 2 for others to purchase?
Did any of you make it to the Monster Hunter 3, Nintendo World Store event this past weekend?
If not, how many of you plan on buying Monster Hunter 3 tomorrow when it releases?  I should be getting my copy tomorrow morning!
Will I see any of you on the hunting grounds?  If so, will any of you be using Wii Speak with the game as well?

If you’re interested in either of these games, you can see prices for them on Amazon.com below:
